Obituary of Jose L. Colon

Please share a memory of Jose to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Jose L. Colon, he was 55 years of age.

In the heart of a bustling city where dreams are as diverse as it's people, there once stood a man, Jose Colon, whose life was a testament to bravery, dedication, and an undiminished spirit of service. His story is one of valor and steadfast commitment—a legacy that resonates with the heartbeat of New York and continues to echo through the streets of Brewster, where he served with honor and distinction.

Jose's journey of service began with a selfless decision to serve his country in the US Army, showcasing his unwavering courage and deep patriotism.

Upon returning to civilian life, his desire to protect and serve found a new home as he joined the New York City Police Department on March 15, 2000. Officer Colon became a steadfast presence in the 40th Precinct, his badge a symbol of safety and his actions a source of hope for the Bronx community he so dearly protected. September 11, 2001, marked a day of immeasurable tragedy, and in the midst of this despair, Officer Colon's resolve never faltered. He stood shoulder to shoulder with his fellow first responders, a pillar of strength amidst the chaos, working tirelessly to aid his city when it needed him most. That day, and in the days that followed, he exemplified the very essence of heroism, a beacon of hope during one of the darkest times in our nation's history.

Officer Colon retired in June 2020, closing a chapter on a two-decade-long career of remarkable service. He continued his calling through various armed positions with MSA and PSI security, never wavering in his commitment to public safety.

March 2024 marked a new beginning as Jose was sworn in as a Brewster Police Officer, ready to serve yet another community with the same fervor he had always shown. His dedication to service was a constant, an unending promise to the people he served. Jose's legacy was not only in the uniform he wore or the dangers he faced; it was also deeply rooted in his family.

He inspired a legacy of service, with a large family who continued his path by becoming NYPD officers, carrying forward the values of integrity, compassion, and resilience that Jose lived by.

On May 3, 2024, tragedy struck when Jose was called back to God. After suffering a heart attack while driving home, he was involved in a motor vehicle accident, ultimately succumbing to his injuries at New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital.

True to his nature, Jose fought to the very end, displaying the same courage and tenacity in his final moments that defined his life of service.

He is survived by his wife; Lilian Colon, sons; Joshua, Dean, and Aaron, Daughters; Amanda, Destiny, Larisa, and Elisa, grandchildren; Isaiah, Lilyana, Juliana, Sebastian, Elijah, Zachary, and Gabriel.
